Lot 1136
Rhine Legions. Anonymous, circa May/June-December 68. Denarius (Silver, 16 mm, 3.09 g, 4 h), uncertain mint in Gaul or in the Rhine Valley. 'G P R Group I' - 'S P Q R Group'. GENIVS P R Diademed head of the Genius of the Roman people to right; behind, scepter. Rev. S P Q R within oak wreath. BMC 22. CG 93.1 (this coin). Cohen 416. Martin 73. Nicolas 53. RIC 46. Very rare, one of just nine known examples. Cleaning scratches, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Christian Gollnow, ex Classical Numismatic Group 53, 15 March 2000, 1475.

The reason for including this coin here and not amongst the other issues from the 'S P Q R Group' lies in its obverse type, which connects three distinct groups together: firstly, the 'SIGNA P R Group' (see lot 1135 above), secondly, the 'S P Q R Group' (the present coin), and thirdly, the Mars VLTOR-reverse (see lots 1137-1139 below).
